Medicine, Magic and Religion

Publisher: Routledge
Number Of Pages: 144
Publication Date: 2001-05-18
ISBN / ASIN: 0415254035

Book Description:
One of the most fascinating men of his generation, W.H.R. Rivers was a British doctor and psychiatrist as well as a leading ethnologist. Immortalized as the hero of Pat Barker's award-winning Regeneration trilogy, Rivers was the clinician who, in the First World War, cared for the poet Siegfried Sassoon and other infantry officers injured on the western front. His researches into the borders of psychiatry, medicine and religion made him a prominent member of the British intelligentsia of the time, a friend of H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw and Bertrand Russell. Part of his appeal lay in an extraordinary intellect, mixed with a very real interest in his fellow man. Medicine, Magic and Religion is a prime example of this. A social institution, it is one of Rivers' finest works. In it, Rivers introduced the then revolutionary idea that indigenous practices are indeed rational, when viewed in terms of religious beliefs.

Book Publisher: Springer (01 October, 2007)
ISBN: 3540740309
Book author: Frederick Chee, Tyrone Fernando

Book Description:
This book presents the field of closed-loop blood glucose control in a simple manner. This includes the hardware and “software” components that make up the control system. The hardware components involved the different types of glucose sensors available (invasive, minimally-invasive and non-invasive) and the different types of insulin. The software component represents the approaches that translate a given blood glucose reading to an appropriate insulin rate. Some of these approaches applied mathematical sciences to model the underlying system and formulate mathematical solutions. Examples are given on how mathematical models are formulated as well as the control algorithms that stem from mathematical exercises. This book describes from a functional level, the basic physiology of blood glucose regulation during fasting and meal. iT will serve as a useful reference to researches in this area of research to understand the fundamentals involved in blood glucose regulation and to gather most recent advancements in diabetes management.

Imagine Homeopathy: A Book of Experiments, Images, and Metaphors

Product Details
Book Publisher: Thieme Medical Publishers (October, 2005)
ISBN: 1588903311
Book author: Chris, Ph.D. Kurz
Amazon Rating: 5.0

Book Description:
Since I was intrigued by the title and have been on to homeopathy for over a year, I decided to add this book to my homeopathy library (currently about 20 books and growing . Already from the start I could see that this book was going to be different than the others. What’s different is that Chris Kurz explains exactly those topics that are difficult to understand in other books in a way that makes intuitive sense to me. He uses images, analogies and even little experiments to get you thinking along the right lines. This approach seemed to work great for me, since even such heavy concepts as “miasms” and “homeoprophylaxis” (homeopathic vaccination) were explained using a metaphor that makes intuitive sense and got me to understand what’s really behind those concepts.

Surgical Complications: Diagnosis and Treatment

Publisher: Imperial College Press
Number Of Pages: 1016
Publication Date: 2007-03-22
ISBN / ASIN: 1860946925

Product Description:
As Professor Owen H Wangensteen, one of the greatest academic surgeons of the 20th century, said: You are a true surgeon from the moment you are able to deal with your complications. Prompt and accurate diagnosis, as well as effective treatment, of surgical complications is one of the most important elements of surgical practice. This is today more important than at any other time, since over the last 20 years we have witnessed the development of new surgical sub-specialties, the performing of complicated operations in very challenging patients, the introduction of new technologies in surgical practice and, last but not least, an increasing interest in monitoring the quality, medico-legal implications, and ethical dimensions of surgical practice and malpractice. As surgical complications have been presented briefly and sporadically in various books and only as a small part of chapters dealing with surgical techniques, there is a pressing need for a modern textbook dealing with the diagnosis, treatment, auditing, medico-legal implications and ethical problems related to surgical complications. Written by internationally known authors, the chapters deal with both the general issues regarding the surgical complications and the specific issues related to each surgical specialty. Each chapter includes: clinical presentation; diagnosis (clinical, laboratory investigations, imaging); treatment (conservative, surgical); and outcome.

Erikson on Development in Adulthood: New Insights from the Unpublished Papers, 2001

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Number Of Pages: 304
ISBN / ASIN: 0195131754

Book Description:
Erik Erikson (1902-1994) was one of the most eminent and prolific psychologists of the 20th century. Over his long career he published a dozen books, including classics such as Childhood and Society; Identity, Youth, and Crisis; and Young Man Luther . He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 1970 for his biography Gandhi's Truth. It was also in 1970, when he retired from Harvard University, that Erikson began to rethink his earlier theories of development. He became increasingly occupied with the conflicts and challenges of adulthood--a shift from his earlier writings on the "identity crises" of adolescence. For the past twenty years, Carol Hoare has written extensively on various aspects of Erikson's work. She has been aided by access to Erikson's unpublished papers at Harvard, as well as cooperation with Joan Erikson, the psychologist's wife and longtime collaborator. By reconstructing Erikson's theory of adulthood from his unpublished papers, Hoare provides not only a much-needed revision of Erikson's work, but also a glimpse into the mind of one of the 20th century's most profound thinkers.

At once more concise, illustrative, and portable than other texts on EEG, Handbook of EEG Interpretation fits in a labcoat pocket, providing immediate information for anyone involved in EEG interpretation. It is a useful tool for all residents, fellows, and clinicians in neurology as well as many internists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, ICU staff, ER staff, EEG technologists, and nurses. The book's seven main sections cover normal, abnormal, and epileptiform EEG patterns, as well as seizures, patterns of special significance (e.g., stupor and coma), polysomnography, and neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring.

The Role of Physical Exercise in Preventing Disease and Improving the Quality of Life

Product Details
Book Publisher: Springer (2007)
ISBN: 884700375X
Book author: Vilberto, Ed. Stocchi

Book Description:
Over the last decade studies have shown that physical exercise plays an important role in maintaining an individual’s psycho-physical balance. In particular, it has been demonstrated that prolonged regular physical activity (now defined in scientific publications as chronic physical activity) helps to significantly reduce the incidence of neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases, which are often associated with ageing, while at the same time bolstering the immune system.
Promoting physical activity therefore helps preventing today’s major health challenges, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiorespiratory diseases, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis, and cancer, thus leading to a reduction in healthcare costs and freeing up resources for future generations.
The volume will be an essential reading for all health professionals and for residents in medicine and in health and physical exercise.
